You may have noticed ads and commercials touting the properties of wild-caught fish, and it’s natural to wonder if there are any real benefits to consuming this type of fish. Well, wonder no more: Read on to learn more about the nutritional values of wild-caught seafood compared to farmed varieties.
What Is Wild-Caught Fish?
First things first: What is wild-caught fish? As the name implies, these fish are caught by a fisherman in a natural environment, such as a lake or river. Farmed seafood, on the other hand, is raised in large tanks.
This fact has an impact on the taste and the nutrition values of the fish. Wild fish eat other organisms in their habitat, wile farm-raised fish are fed processed high-fat products in order to produce larger fish.
What Are the Benefits of Consuming Wild-Caught Fish?
From a nutritional standpoint, wild-caught fish tend to have significantly lower fat and saturated fat values compared to farm-raised fish. For example, the table below will give you an idea of the difference in nutritional values between wild-caught salmon and farmed salmon
Wild Caught Salmon (198 grams) | Farmed Salmon (198 grams) | |
Calories | 281 | 412 |
Protein | 39 grams | 40 grams |
Fat | 13 grams | 27 grams |
Saturated fat | 1.9 grams | 6 grams |
Omega-3 | 3,996 grams | 4,961 mg |
Omega-6 | 341 mg | 1,944 mg |
Potassium | 28% | 21% |
Zinc | 9% | 5% |
Iron | 9% | 4% |
As you can see, salmon caught in the wild contains significantly less calories, fat and saturated fat than farmed salmon, which in turn contains more Omega-6 fatty acids. Wild salmon is also higher in important minerals such as potassium, zinc, and iron.
Pollutants
Some studies have shown that fish raised industrially can be higher in contaminants than wild-caught varieties. One of the main concerns in this regard is Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB), a chemical that has been associated with many health problems. A 2006 study found that concentrations of PCB were “significantly higher” in farmed salmon than in wild salmon (specifically the Alaskan Chinook variety).
