You may have seen basmati rice mentioned in magazines and websites. This type of rice is touted by its taste and health benefits, and is so popular that some call it “the prince of rice”. However, not everyone knows the essential facts about basmati rice. Keep reading to learn more about basmati, its origins, and its nutritional value.
“The Fragrant One”
Being a slender-grained type of rice, the shape of basmati grains is distinctive as well. When cooked, they elongate to almost twice their size and appear separate and fluffy.
Basmati rice is traditionally grown the Northern Indian states of Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and parts of Western Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. However, this type of rice is also grown in the United States and sold under commercial names that evoke the sound of the word “basmati.”
Health Benefits of Basmati Rice
From a nutritional standpoint Basmati is typically high in carbs and calories and contains micronutrients such as folate, thiamine and selenium.
Additionally, basmati contains less arsenic than other varieties of rice. Arsenic is a heavy metal that tends to accumulate in the body, increasing the risk of diabetes, heart problems, among other ailments.
Basmati is available in both white and brown varieties, with the latter being considered a whole grain. Whole grains preserve all their essential parts (endosperm, germ, and bran) and its consumption is associated with low risk of several diseases.
