People are increasingly aware of the importance of consuming local food. But what are the reasons underlying this trend? Is there any truth behind the purported benefits of consuming what’s locally produced?
Before we begin we should define what “local” means. A now-famous book proposed a “100-mile diet” that relied on farmers’ markets and local farms located within 100 miles of the author’s residence. This distance is not set in stone, but is a good frame of reference for what can be considered “local.”
Below you will find some of the reasons why consuming local food is actually a smart option when it comes to taste, nutrition and taking care of the environment.
More Flavor
If the crops have to travel less, they can be picked when their ripeness is just right. Conversely, crops harvested on distant locations are picked early to allow for them to be packaged and distributed. This has a direct impact on the flavor of your food. Generally speaking, the less time it sits in storage, the tastier the produce will be. And in local markets very often the product has been picked within 24 hours of the purchase by the final customer.
More Nutrients
Since they are picked just at the right time and spend less time in storage, local produce keeps more of its nutrients compared to produce that has to travel long distances. For example, researchers at Montclair University in the United States found that the vitamin C content of broccoli decreased by 50% when it was shipped from out of the country.
Supports the Local Economy
By buying from your local farmers’ market you support an entire economic chain, not only the people directly involved in the market where you buy your vegetables. Think about all the expenses of a farmer: They have to pay for gas, to get their vehicle fixed, for food and clothing for them and their families. Supporting your local farmers is supporting your entire community.
Benefits the Environment
Consuming local products is a benefit for yourself, but also for the environment. Since it has to travel less, local food reduces CO2 emissions. Furthermore, by supporting your local farmers you are protecting the green areas around you, as your business allows them keep their land, which may be object of real estate speculation.
