Today we learn more about fennel, a white-green plant that can turn any dish into a feast of fragrances and flavors that will delight you as well as your family and guests.
What Is Fennel?
Fennel is a flavorful plant native to Southern Europe and Asia Minor and cultivated in temperate regions all over the world, including the United States.
You may be surprised to discover that fennel belongs to the same family (Apiaceae) as carrots, celery, parsley, and parsnip, among others.
Fennel seeds are believed to aid digestion and reduce gas. In fact, eating fennel seeds after a meal is a well-established custom in some countries.
The Health Benefits of Fennel
Not only does fennel add interesting anise-like undertones to any dish, but it also offers an interesting host of health benefits. For example:
- Fennel contains a lot of nutrients. One cup (87 grams) of raw fennel (bulb) provides 2.7 grams of dietary fiber (11% of the DV), 360 mg of potassium (10% of the DV), 10.4 gm of Vitamin C (17% of the DV), 42.6 mg of calcium (4% of DV), 43.5 mg of phosphorus (4% of DV), and 14.8 mg of magnesium (4% of DV).
- It contains powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that combat the action of free radicals, which have been linked to many ailments. Some of the antioxidants found in fennel include chlorogenic acid and limonene.
- It may have anti-inflammatory properties. Due to its combination of nutrients and antioxidants, fennel may have anti-inflammatory properties, a characteristic linked to a reduced risk of a number of chronic ailments.
Generally speaking, fennel is safe to consume. However, keep in mind that, if you are allergic to celery and carrot, you may also be allergic to fennel
