Squash and zucchini are two terms that are often used interchangeably. However, while they may look similar, there are some key differences between the two. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at the zucchini vs. squash debate and explore what sets these two veggies apart.
Squash vs Zucchini: What Is the Difference?
The difference between squash and zucchini is straightforward: zucchini is a type of squash, so all zucchinis are squashes but not all squashes are zucchini. Let’s see what this means, exactly.
There are many varieties of squash, but they’re typically grouped into two categories: summer squash and winter squash.
Summer squash includes zucchini, as well as yellow squash, crookneck squash, and pattypan squash. Winter squash, on the other hand, includes butternut squash, acorn squash, and Hubbard squash, among others.
So, zucchini is a type of summer squash, although it’s generally dark green and straighter in shape than other varieties of summer squash. Zucchini is a great choice for recipes like zucchini boats, zucchini bread, and grilled zucchini.
By the way squashes are technically fruits, although they’re often cooked like vegetables. But if you follow our blog, you know that they’re not alone!
