Whether it’s pasta dishes, salads, or casseroles, broccoli is a staple of healthy eating. We know that broccoli lovers out there have a lot of questions about their favorite vegetable, including “When is broccoli in season?” With that in mind, today we tackle this and other useful questions about broccoli.
When is Broccoli in Season?
Broccoli can be enjoyed all year round, but it’s at its peak season from October to March. Depending on where you live, broccoli season may start as early as December and last until May.
Bonus trivia fact: California leads the nation in broccoli production thanks to its warm weather. The Golden State produces almost 92% of the broccoli consumed in the United States!
In addition to enjoying fresh broccoli during peak season, you can also freeze it for later use. Blanching the florets before freezing them will help retain their flavor and texture when thawed out. To learn more about blanching, check out our previous post, “Can Cilantro Be Frozen?”
How to Choose Broccoli at the Grocery Store?
When selecting broccoli at the grocery store or farmers market, look for heads that are heavy with tightly closed florets and deep green color with a purplish tinge.
Avoid limp or yellowing broccoli and check the broccoli carefully for any signs of decay, such as woody stems or open buds.
How To Serve Broccoli?
There are many ways to enjoy this healthy veggie – whether it’s steamed, roasted, stir-fried or added to soups and salads.
