Greek cuisine offers a whole universe of flavors and interesting combinations that match the rich history of this Mediterranean country.
One of the most famous staples of the Greek culinary tradition is Tzatziki, a fresh sauce made with Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, salt, olive oil and vinegar or lemon. It may also include herbs such as mint, parsley or thyme.
A Companion to Greek Day-to-day Life
Tzatziki sauce is the natural companion of Souvlaki, the popular Greek dish that consists of small pieces of meat (and sometimes vegetables) grilled on a skewer. Gyro, roasted meat served in a pita bread, wouldn’t be the same without the garlicky touch of Tzatziki.
This sauce is part of Greek day-to-day life. It appears every day in taverns as an appetizer or dip and its origins are said to be linked to Indian and Persian cuisine. The truth is that Tzatziki is a variation of a theme common around the Mediterranean and the Middle East. In fact, the origin of the word “Tzatziki” is “Cacik”, a Turk cold soup made with similar ingredients.
Delicious, but Healthy as Well
As we have seen before, Greek and Italian cuisine (the Mediterranean diet) are exceptionally healthy, and tzatziki is no exception. Although this sauce is delicious, two tablespoons contain only 35 calories, approximately. That leaves a lot of room, considering that the daily calorie intake for moderately active adults (26 to 30 years) is 2,600 calories for men and 2,000 calories for women.
In addition, Greek yogurt contains less lactose and more proteins than regular yogurt. Just 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of Greek yogurt provide 10 grams of protein. Now, the dietary reference intake (DRI) of protein is 56 grams per day for the average sedentary man and 46 grams for the average sedentary woman.
