How to Freeze Cooked Quinoa
Quinoa is an herbaceous annual plant grown mainly for its edible seeds. Over the last few years quinoa has become extremely popular, and for good reason — quinoa is high in fiber, protein-free, and one of the few plants that contain all nine essential amino acids.
With that being said, even superfoods need freezing at some point. So, can you freeze quinoa once you cook it?
The answer is yes, cooked quinoa can be frozen. Here are some tips to help you do just that:
- First, let your cooked quinoa cool down completely. To speed up the process, you can spread the quinoa on a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Once the quinoa reaches room temperature, place it in a resealable plastic bag making sure to remove all the air from the bag.
- Tip: it may be a good idea to portion your quinoa in more than one bag. This way you won’t have to thaw all the quinoa if you only need a little.
- Finally, pat the bag to form an even layer before putting your quinoa in the freezer. As with other frozen foods, it’s a good idea to place a freezer-friendly label on the bag indicating the date when you froze your quinoa.
- Remember: once frozen, quinoa stays good for about one month.
- When you need to defrost your quinoa, just pull the bag out of the freezer, and let the quinoa thaw until it reaches room temperature. Keep in mind that this process may take between one to two hours. Once the quinoa is defrosted, prepare it as you prefer and enjoy it!
