If you love curry and spicy food, you are in luck. In today’s post, we talk about the hottest type of curry, plus other interesting facts about curry. Keep reading to learn more!
What Is Curry?
Curry is a dish whose main feature is a sauce seasoned with spices that may include onion, ginger and garlic (the base of most curries) plus cloves, cumin, fennel, pepper, nutmeg, chili peppers, and turmeric, among others.
While curry is most commonly served with chicken, lamb and fish are other popular alternatives. There are also vegetable curries, which are characteristic of southern India.
The term “curry” comes from the Tamil word kari, “sauce” or “relish for rice.”
Curry originated in the Indian subcontinent and became popular around the world during the18th century, when British officials and bureaucrats returned home after spending time in India and acquiring a taste for its cuisine.
Which Type of Curry Is the Hottest?
If you were to give a medal to the world’s hottest curry, the honors would go to the widower curry, a specialty of a now-closed restaurant in Lincolnshire, England
With naga infinity chillis as its main ingredient, the widower allegedly scored a whopping six million (yes, that’s 6,000,0000) points on the Scoville scale, a tool for measuring the spiciness of peppers and other foods.
For context, a jalapeno pepper measures a measly 2,500–8,000 Scoville points.
A person finishing a plate of widower curry was considered a newsworthy event, so it’s not an experience within the reach of the average food lover.
When it comes to more readily available curries, the three hottest types are naga curry, phaal curry, and bhut jolokia curry, each scoring 1,000,000 points on the Scoville scale.
A notch below these, but still within the realm of the extremely hot, you’ll find vindaloo curry, a dish from Goa (southwestern coast of India), able to deliver a nice punch of 175,000 – 500,000 points on the Scoville scale.
