Italian cuisine is an endless source of amazing dishes that are delicious and easy to prepare. A great example is chicken pizzaiola, a simple specialty that brings all the flavor and vibrancy of Italian cuisine to your everyday meals.
What Is Chicken Pizzaiola?
You don’t have to speak Italian to realize that the terms “pizzaiola” and “pizza” are related.
“Pizzaiolo” means “pizza maker” in Italian, so you can translate chicken pizzaiola as “chicken prepared pizza-maker style.”
Chicken pizzaiola is a variation of “carne alla pizzaiola” (or pizza-maker style beef). Popular belief has it that pizza makers in Naples were really busy and needed a dish they could prepare on the fly with some ingredients they had at hand. They came up with meat cooked with tomatoes, olive oil, oregano and basil.
“Necessity Is the Mother of Invention”
In a great example of the old saying “necessity is the mother of invention,” the dish created by the Neapolitan pizza makers took off and became a staple in the diets of Italians all over the country. “Carne alla pizzaiola” was born.
It didn’t take long for other variations to appear, with “pollo alla pizzaiola”, or chicken pizzaiola, being the most popular, followed closely by “pasta alla pizzaiola,”
Like many other Italian dishes, the secret of great Chicken Pizzaiola is to use high-quality, fresh ingredients. These are some additions you may consider if you want to put a twist on your basic chicken pizzaiola:
- Mozzarella
- Capers
- Black olives
- Potatoes
