At this point, everyone knows that veggies are good for you. But how many servings of vegetables should you consume per day? In this blog, we give you all the information you need.
How Many Servings of Vegetables Should You Consume per Day?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend consuming at least half to two cups per day of fruit and two to three cups per day of vegetables.
A recent study confirmed these ballpark figures. Results show that people who consume five servings per day of fruits and vegetables (two servings of fruits and three servings of vegetables) have a 13% lower risk of death from any cause and a 35% lower risk of death from respiratory disease.
Unfortunately, according to 2015 figures, just one in ten adults meet the fruit and vegetable recommendations outlined by the CDC.
How To Consume More Vegetables and Fruits
The good news is that sneaking more fruits and vegetables into your diet doesn’t have to be difficult — in fact, it can even be tasty.
Here are some easy ways to up your veggie and vegetable game:
- Start your day with grapefruit, apple, or other fruit.
- Add bananas to your cereal.
- Chop large amounts of fruits and vegetables and keep them in the fridge as snacks.
- Make your own packed lunch (or order it from Chef Gourmet!)
- Fall in love with salads: they are convenient, easy to prepare, and delicious to boot! If you are dining out, order a side salad with your lunch or dinner.
- Try new recipes. Just Google the words “recipes with” plus the name of the vegetable or fruit you have available and have fun exploring.
- Don’t shy away from frozen vegetables. Their texture may not be as inviting as that of fresh produce, but the nutrient content is basically the same.
