There are a lot of whiskey drinkers out there and they’ll be the first to tell you that it’s good for you. Most of the time you all you hear about are the bad side effects of drinking alcohol. The truth is drinking alcohol is bad for you if you do too much of it. There are some health benefits however if you imbibe in moderation.
For one thing, whiskey reduces stress. It goes without saying that having a drink takes the edge off. Drinking a single serving of whiskey does settle the nerves and calms the brain.
Whiskey has been found to lower the risk of dementia. A 2003 case study reported that adults who consumed one to six alcoholic beverages a week showed significantly lower risk of dementia than those who don’t drink. But there’s a fine line, the study also showed that those who drank more than six drinks a week didn’t do so well.
Whiskey has qualities that help with the digestion. Drinking whiskey after a large meal can help ease an upset stomach. The whiskey simulates the stomachs enzymes which in turn helps to break down food.
You can decrease your risk of stroke if you drink whiskey. A study from Harvard University reported that moderate alcohol consumption corresponds with a 25 to 40 percent drop in risk of heart disease and ischemic stroke.
Whiskey is known to boost the immune system. The antioxidants and trace levels of vitamins in whiskey stimulate the immune system, thereby helping to fight off normal cold, illnesses, and infections. In fact, if there’s nothing else around to use as a disinfectant, whiskey can be poured on a fresh wound to make sure it does not get infected.
There are many health benefits that come from drinking whiskey but there can also be many bad effects if you drink too much. Always drink only in moderation.
