From burritos to soups, black beans seem to be everywhere. However, not everyone is familiar with this nutritious legume. For example, are black beans a good protein source? In today’s blog, we take a dive into the world of black beans, from their benefits to a bit of back history.
What are Black Beans?
Black beans, also known as turtle beans, or frijoles negros in Spanish, are small, shiny legumes that are native to Mexico, Central, and South America. However, the United States also loves black beans. For example, Michigan State University has developed two varieties of black beans: “Zenith” and “Zorro.”
These beans are members of the Phaseolus vulgaris species, which also includes other well-known bean varieties like kidney beans, navy beans, and pinto beans.
Are Black Beans a Good Protein Source?
Yes! Black beans are a good source of protein. For example, one cup (172 grams) of black beans cooked without salt contains 15.2 grams of protein, or about 30% of the Daily Value.
In addition to proteins, black beans come packed with other essential nutrients that provide impressive health benefits.
Black beans are an excellent source of fiber and folate, with no cholesterol or saturated fats. They are high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals such as magnesium, and manganese.
