Chicken is popular all over the world, and for good reason. In addition to being tasty and versatile, chicken offers many interesting health benefits. Read on to learn more about them!
A Great Source of Protein
Chicken is a good source of protein with relatively little fat, at least in comparison to other sources of protein.
Of all the parts of the chicken, the breast is the cut with the greater amount of protein, with approximately 31 grams of protein per 100 grams. That’s why the breast is favored by people who want to lose weight while maintaining muscle mass.
Provides Selenium
This essential mineral works as an antioxidant. This means that it helps protects the body against the action of particles called free radicals which contribute to aging and health conditions. Selenium is also essential for your immune system. Chicken is a good way to add selenium to your diet. Three ounces of white meat provide about 22 to 25 micrograms of selenium (the recommended daily amount of selenium is 55 micrograms for individuals over 14 years and 60 micrograms for pregnant).
Rich in Vitamin B3
Also known as niacine, this vitamin is important because it helps convert carbohydrates into energy and maintain the health of the body cells, a process essential to life. Vitamin B3 also has a positive impact on heart health, since it lowers cholesterol levels. Just three ounces of chicken breast provide 11.4 micrograms of Niacin, which equals to 71 percent of the daily intake recommended for men or 81 per cent for women
Rich in Vitamin B5
This vitamin, also known as pantothenic acid, is a very important nutrient for human life. In addition to playing a crucial role in the breakdown of fats and carbohydrates, vitamin B5 is critical to the production of blood cells and some hormones. Chicken is a good source of this nutrient. Three ounces of breast chicken provide 1.3 micrograms of vitamin B5, equal to 26 percent of the daily value.
Rich in Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6, or Pyridoxine, takes part in many important processes throughout your body. It helps in the metabolic process of proteins and carbohydrates, assists in the production of insulin, white and red blood cells, neurotransmitters, DNA and RNA. Three ounces of chicken breast contain 0.5 micrograms of Pyrioxidine, or the 29 percent of the value you should consume every day.
